The Physician Assistant Mixup

I went to a new doctor this weekend. He is a friend of my Aunt.

“Your Aunt tells me you’re a physician assistant,” the doctor said as he walked into the room.

“Uhh,” I said giving myself a moment to think. I am not a physician assistant. I am a production assistant. In television. He was confused by the jobs’ identical “PA” abbreviation.

“Uhh,” I said again. He smiled and looked into my eyes.

I felt as if he was proud of me. As if he approved of my life choices. As if by being a medical PA, he and I were on the same team working together to save lives.

“Uhh yeah.” I responded, inspired. “That’s right. I’m a physician assistant.”

He listened to my heartbeat. We spent the rest of the appointment singing, “The leg bone’s connected to the knee bone, the knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bone’s connected to the hip bone and they all make up parts of the body.”

  1. Love that story. What’s funny is I used to be a PA myself, yes a production assistant before working for 20th century fox and Meg Ryan and now I am about to start PA school to become a physician assistant! Crazy! How’s PA life for you in NYC?
